Title: why is being different?

So i've known this guy for about a year. he is my best friends boyfriends roommate. we have always had a thing for each other and he has tried to kiss me a few times and i wouldn't let anything happen because i didn't want to ruin anything or anything to be weird.

well me and my boyfriend recently broke up and hes been a good friend to me since. we all went to the beach and on the last night we were there i finally kissed him back. the whole ride home he held my hand and did so much for me. the next couple weeks we spent a lot of time together and he asked me out on some dates. we ended up sleeping together. i told him many of times i wasn't ready for a realtionship.

he went out with his buddies one night and kept calling and checking in with me even when i told him he didn't have to that we weren't together. well after that night he just stopped calling. so a few days later i called and he said he has been on "the go". a friend told me that he said he didn't want a relationship. but i thought i already made that clear to him.

what does all this mean and how can i tell him that i'm fine with just dating?
