Sometimes you don't know how much you love someone until something happens.

Today my ex-wife took my daughter with her while I was working. They went to a Dog Groomer's to get my ex's persian cat sheared. On the way in, my daughter was running and slipped on some gravel and went down head first. There was blood everywhere. My ex rushed her to an urgent care facility close by and called me.

Where they were was about 30 minutes away, I must have cut off at least 10 minutes driving there. All I was told was Sarah had an accident and might need stitches. Sometimes when you love someone from the deepest reaches of your heart, the feelings are there, but you don't feel them all the time. I totally love my daughter, but when driving there, I felt blank inside. Not scared, not loving, not anything but determined.

When I got there, it turned out that she needed about three stitches. And I said go ahead, they were waiting for me to come and clear the form of payment (sheesh). My daughter was a real, brave little girl. I was going to help hold her, but I started to become dizzy. My emotions were there, they had my body in overdrive and I had become relieved too quickly. I didn't faint, but it was close. I was in another space, with my arms tingling for some reason.

When I recovered, which took a few minutes and with my having to lay down, Sarah was fine. Nice Barbie bandaid over the wound on her head, and ready for me to carry her. She is a "Daddy's Girl."

Love for your children you would think is automatic, that here is something you helped bring into the world and a part of you is in your children. For most of us, our children is our greatest gift in the world, and the greatest gift we give the world.

But, Love is a verb, it is an action, and not all parents choose to Love their children. It is a choice, a decision, to love your children. One I wish all parents would make.

When raising children the way that psychologists are now saying is best, is when you are firm with your children and loving too. Set limits with them, but make sure that love is an action with you as parents. Hugs, kisses, and telling them you love them. Make your actions match your words and heart.
